Preparations for the future development of the Nová Huť site continue
Ostrava, June 3, 2026 – The first phase of preparatory and demolition work is underway at the Nová Huť site, paving the way for the future development of the area and the creation of a modern industrial zone. The demolition and related work cover an area of approximately 250 hectares, which in the past housed primary steel production facilities, including blast furnaces, a sintering plant, a steel plant and a coking plant.
In recent months, buildings in a state of disrepair that could have posed a safety risk to people moving within the site and its surroundings have been removed. At the same time, extensive cleanup of the area continues including waste removal and the clearing of self-sown trees while preserving existing tree lines. Approximately 80 metric tons of waste have been removed from the site so far.
“We are preparing the site for its new use. Our goal is to create a safe and well-prepared space for future investments and industrial development, which will enable the creation of modern projects and ensure the long-term prospects of this site,” said CEO Radek Strouhal.
Currently, design and permitting work related to the removal of other unused structures is underway. For example, a demolition permit has already been issued for the former slag plant, including related structures, the former telephone exchange building, and several warehouse buildings in the northern part of the site.
A contractor for demolishing the slag plant has already been selected through a competitive bidding process and they have begun preparation work. At the same time, competitive bidding processes continue to secure the demolition of other structures in the northern part of the site.
Another key component of the project is the preparation of relocations and the disconnection of existing utility networks. These include, for example, electrical power lines, data networks, and distribution systems for industrial gases, compressed air, and heating water. As part of the site’s future development, plans also call for the construction of new railroad tracks, which are currently in the design phase.
From both a technical and organizational standpoint, the project is exceptionally challenging. All work is being carried out while the site remains fully operational and must be carefully coordinated so as not to jeopardize employee safety or the continuity of production.
“Our goal is not only to prepare the site for a new use but also to actively seek partners with whom we can jointly shape its future development. We want to have a say in which companies will operate in the area so that the future development of the site will be beneficial in the long term for both Nová Huť and the entire region,” said Radek Strouhal, the company’s CEO.
The company is also considering using some of the buildings slated for demolition for training exercises by units of the Integrated Rescue System. Selected buildings could thus serve the Czech Army, the Czech Police, or the Fire and Rescue Service in practicing emergency responses and handling extraordinary situations before they are demolished.
